The Beauty There

Raw BoardOne of my favorite aspects of woodworking is finding “the surprise inside” a piece of lumber.  To many people, the board here is a useless scrap; about 24 inches long, 10 inches wide and somewhat gnarly.  To me, this piece asked to be cleaned and cut into useable pieces of wood.

And that’s what I did.

Milled LumberI cut it into three pieces, then milled the faces and finally sliced them into the perfect size to make a small box.  As you can see, the grain and color stood out dramatically when I was done.

I even had enough left over to make a small decorative serving tray.

In the end, I was rewarded with a beautiful box that was ideal for holding trinkets or loose change.  Personally, I like it displayed on a shelf or end table.  The less than desirable piece of wood turned into a remarkable accessory.  Who could ask for anything more.
