When my daughter gave birth to her first child she asked me to make a box. She said she wanted something she could keep until her baby’s 18th birthday.
Her plan was to collect all those things one might put in a traditional Baby Book and then continue to add to it on each birthday. Then when her child had grown she would present the box as a personal time capsule.
What would make this box even more special was a broader persepctive. The plan involved asking aunts and uncles to write a short note on each birthday and adding those to the contents of the box.
When all was said and done, her baby, now 18 years old, would have the opportunity to look back and remember. And, possibly even learn something new.
It would be a gift that would connect the child to the family in a very intimate way.
I thought it was a wonderful idea and, well, I made the box. One great aspect of this idea, is that it is never too late to start. Look through the boxes here and find the box to pass on those special memories.
